Lucjan Nowinski, who holds an MA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, came to the U.S. from Poland in 1987. When he arrived he was painting in a traditional manner, "within a frame". After coming to New York and working with an artist in Long Island, he was exposed to other media than what he had been accustomed to and began to paint on aluminum. As he was using acrylic and epoxy on the aluminum, he became interested in textures and getting away from the standard framed canvas. Freeing his artistic expression from any restriction of the frame, Lucjan creates paintings that have their own shapes. He accomplishes this beyond the two-dimensional level seen in the contours by also creating three-dimensional relief.
